SAILING TIPS

Steve Colgate Shows You an Easy Way to Properly Coil and Throw a Line

Here are more great sailing lessons to keep in mind when you are getting ready to tie up to a dock, or need to throw a line to someone on another boat or ashore. To avoid tossing someone a jumbled up line that goes in the water short of its target, watch this video and keep these helpful hints in mind:

  • Do large coils first in one hand
  • Half-way through start making smaller coils in the same hand (smaller coils are easier to throw)
  • Move the smaller coils to your other hand and throw these out to your target
  • You'll get a nice straight toss as the rest of the line goes out

Take sailing lessons with Offshore Sailing School. In any of our sailing courses you learn and practice how to properly throw a line ashore, to another boat or a target successfully. This comes in particularly handy when you are bareboat cruising and coming into a dock to go ashore or fuel up. You want to look smart! In our Bareboat Cruisiing and Live Aboard Cruising courses you learn how to do this the right way.
