This is a week-long introduction to powerboat course that’ll set your course for a lifetime of island sailing vacations on a sleek power yacht from The Moorings.
Your classroom is your charter yacht – a gorgeous 47’ Moorings Power Cat. Your first two days are chock full of learning with an expert, licensed and certified powerboat instructor from Steve and Doris Colgate’s acclaimed Offshore Sailing and Power Cruise School. On the eve of your second day – with course certificates in hand – you’ll power away with confidence on a delightful five-day cruise on the very same boat.
A great learning experience for couples and families
This powerboat learning vacation is a terrific opportunity for couples or a family who want to share the adventure of cruising the beautiful British Virgin Islands with confidence. For one Power Learn 'N Cruise charter price, we will teach up to six in your party, kids and teens included of course! If some of you just want to relax and soak up the sun while others learn the nuances of handling a big power cat, that's fine. All we need to know in advance is how many will be taking the power cruising course the first two days.
In the two-day powerboat training program you’ll cover:
- How to skillfully drive and maneuver a beautiful Moorings power yacht
- Safety procedures concerning all aspects of running and living aboard The Moorings 474 power catamaran
- The quickest and safest way to retrieve an object or person in the water
- How to pick up mooring balls, anchor and dock in various wind conditions
- Procedures for using, checking and trouble-shooting onboard systems
- Electronic and line of sight navigation
Start your Learn 'N Cruise adventure on a Thursday or Sunday evening
The official time for boarding your yacht is 6 p.m. the evening before your two-day course starts. Please plan your travel day accordingly. Your instructor will meet you at The Moorings check-in desk at the base shortly before 6 p.m. and take you to your yacht. After a yacht orientation, he or she will help you stow your gear and provisions, do a safety briefing and teach you how to operate the systems aboard you will likely use that night. Your instructor will then leave you to enjoy dinner ashore and your first evening aboard in privacy.
The next morning at 8 a.m. your learning adventure begins with a check of all systems aboard, chart and navigation briefing, and then hands-on powerboat instruction while cruising the islands.
The next two days (Friday and Saturday or Monday and Tuesday, depending on your start date) you’ll study, practice drills, navigate and run the boat – all coached by your instructor. During this period you’ll get at least 16 hours of hands-on personalized training. On the evening of your second day of instruction, your instructor will leave you with certificates in hand – ready to power away on a fun-filled 5-day bareboat adventure in the glorious British Virgin Islands.
Your Power Learn 'N Cruise package includes
- Charter of a Moorings 474 power cat for seven days
- Comprehensive iInstruction the first two days (for those who signed up in advance - maximum 6)
- Course textbook sent in advance (maximum 3 per party)
- Course certificates at end of second day for all who signed up in advance to participate in the learning experience

On the morning of your seventh day, you’ll return the yacht to The Moorings base in Road Town – with cameras full of photos and memories to last a lifetime as you prepare to depart for home.
7-Day Power Learn 'N Cruise package costs
- $995 tuition total for one or two people
- Each additional person up to six, $450 per person
- Two-day provisioning package during instruction days - $35 per person per day
- Plus applicable charter fees for the Moorings power cat you choose (to be quoted when you contact us)
- Fuel to be paid when boat is returned
We recommend that you purchase the two-day provisioning package for everyone in your party during the training period, and then do your own provisioning after the instructor leaves you for your five-day cruise. During your cruise you will surely want to dine ashore at the many fun and delicious eateries on the islands. There are also groceries in Road Town and other locations. Fuel used during your week is extra and charged upon arrival back at The Moorings base. Provisioning for the instructor is provided in your tuition charge.

While the Power Learn 'N Cruise course will give you the information you need to handle your charter yacht and cruise the British Vrigin Islands with confidence, we offer a more comprehensive certification course with an expert instructor aboard over a five-day period which covers a lot more and is based on a per person pacakge rate, allowing a couple or single participant to sign up without having to charter the whole boat.
This is the Fast Track to Power Cruise course which may be purchased on an individual or couples basis, sharing the learning experience with others who request the same course date. Everyone aboard is involved in the learning process and its a great way to learn and meet others with similar goals. In this program your package is based on a private cabin (single or two sharing) and a maximum of four aboard learning with an expert Offshore Sail and Power instructor throughout the five days.
