Rediscovering Sailing

Six years ago I discovered the sailing courses offered by Offshore Sailing School, but work and graduate school commitments delayed my signing up.

I was living in midtown Manhattan and daydreamed about being out on the water, as I had while growing up on the Connecticut shoreline.

My parents were city kids, but my father had somehow gotten sea legs as a young adult living in The Bronx. When he moved our family to Bermuda Cove in Westport, the fun began--sailing a Sunfish, a Dyer dinghy and then his Tartan 37 in the Sound. I took my first course when I was nine years old.

But fast-forward to my late 30s and I wished to rediscover the moment when you motor out to open water, then cut the engine. It's the best.

Finally in 2011, the day after I turned 43, I headed to Captiva Island for the "Learn to Sail" program. It met and exceeded my expectations!

Please see my video below. It was very tough to keep my enthusiasm for this Offshore experience within 90 seconds--it took about 20 takes!--but I did my best.

Thank you, Offshore!
