OFFSHORE SAILING SCHOOL ARTICLES AND STORIES
It all started in midtown Manhattan in 1964
Offshore Sailing School has been the focus of numerous stories and articles over the years, starting with a Business Week profile of Steve Colgate teaching sailing in midtown Manhattan in 1966.
June 2011 Hunter contest stories
In the first six months of 2011, we ran a contest for graduates of Offshore Sailing School Learn to Sail and Cruising courses. A short essay and photos or video describing the learning experience were required. The entries were judged by the publisher, editor in chief and assitant editor of SAIL magazine. Josh Adams (publisher) wrote: "There are some great submissions here. What impresses us in the variety of reasons for taking an Offshore course. Everything from family bonding to individual development to being green. Cool."
New York Times feature in 2010 won highest award
A feature article on Offshore Sailing School in the New York Times Weekend Arts section in June of 2010 garnered a platinum award at the January 2011 HMAI ceremonies in New York City. Over more than 47 years of teaching sailing, you can imagine we have had a lot of good fortune with publicity.
Fortune, Cosmo, Sports Illustrated and more . . .
Fortune magazine did a feature on our racing courses in their “On Your Own Time” section, Cosmopolitan sent a writer for a story that sparked incredible interest (the blonde hoisting a sail might have had something to do with that), and twice Sports Illustrated used Offshore Sailing School locations and boats as the backdrop for their annual swimsuit edition – quite a thrill for Steve Colgate and his instructors!
Our corporate programs have been covered in Successful Meetings and other business-oriented publications. Other features and articles have appeared in almost all the boating and sailing magazines with another story in SAIL scheduled for 2012.
You can read the most recent stories here including a four-page feature on our Fast Track to Cruising course in Delta’s SKY magazine December 2007and Southern Living in March 2008.
In addition to a lot of interviews with local and national TV personalities, foreign press have found sailing with Offshore Sailing School of interest for their viewers and readership, especially in Japan and Germany.
Colgate named "dean of women's sailing"
In May 2009, Doris Colgate was dubbed the “dean of women sailing” in a feature in Boat U.S. magazine called “Top Women in American Boating” and then interviewed at length in July 2009 Soundings Trade Only. ESPN-W featured Colgate's work with AdventureSail for at-risk girls in June 2011.
Our grads are our best ambassadors
With all this exposure, in the end the graduates of Offshore Sailing School are truly our best ambassadors. Their stories are heart-warming, inspiring, and amazing. If you would like to talk with some of them about their experiences, many have given us permission to be contacted. Please send an email to sail@offshoresailing.com and we'll be happy to give you contact information.
Here's Larry Lohmann, recent grad with his wife Diane of our Live Aboard Cruising course in the British Virgin Islands. Diane sent the Colgates a photo taken of them with the Lohmanns in Tortola for a birthday present for Larry. Read his story and visit our Testimonials page for many more. We hope you enjoy the articles and stories posted here; and will soon start sailing or continue on with the lifestyle and passion our graduates all of us at Offshore Sailing School share.
